Estimate volumes of liquids in ( a ) litres and ( b ) millilitres.

EXAMPLE 1

Given that the volume of the medicine in bottle P are 50 mℓ, estimate the volume of the medicine in bottle Q.

EXAMPLE 2

Given that the volume of the water in basin X is 20 ℓ, estimate the volume of water in basin Y.

Compare the volumes of two liquids using standard units (a) litres and (b) millilitres.

EXAMPLE .

If the volume of liquid in containers A is 100 mℓ and 1 ℓ, what are the volumes in containers B and D ?

Measure and record volumes of liquid using standard units (a) litres and (b) millilitres.

1. The units used for measuring volumes of liquid are litres ( ℓ ) and millilitres ( mℓ ).

2. Read and record the volumes of the liquids shown in measuring cylinder obove.

Answers

(a) 200 mℓ
(b) 700 mℓ
(c) 4 ℓ
(d) 5 ℓ

Measure and compare volumes of liquid using standard units.

We measure volumes in litre ( ℓ ) and millilitre ( mℓ).

Read scales to the nearest division

1. Litre ( ℓ ) is the standard unit using to measure a big volume of liquid, such as the amount in a swimming pool.

2. Millilitre ( mℓ ) is the standard unit used to mesure a small volume of liquid, such as the amount of cough drops in a bottle.

3. We usually use measuring cylinder to measure the volumes of liquid.

4. The correct way to read a measuring cylinder is shown here.
